Creative is pursuing a UNDP funded activity to conduct a study on Community Perceptions of Security and Violent Extremism in Tanzania, specifically in Zanzibar, Mwanza, Tanga, Pwani, Lindi and Mtwara. The study will improve understanding of the local context, establish baseline indicators for project work in the target areas, and establish the broader monitoring and evaluation framework and regime for all activities of the first phase of UNDP’s project implementation.

Creative seeks a CVE researcher with substantial experience in carrying out research and surveys with recongnized national or international organizations especially in the areas such as CVE, conflict and peacebuilding.  The Researcher will be responsible to travel in one or more of the six regions identified by UNDP and conduct out quantitative surveys, qualitative interviews and focus groups with identified stakeholders and analyze data. It will provide technical support to the program in key subject matters. This is a part-time consultant position, estimated at 50-75 percent level of effort.

Reporting & Supervision:

The Researcher will report to the Team Lead.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assist with setting up focus groups, interviews and additional necessary meetings with key stakeholers in the six regions;
  • Carry out quantitative surveys, qualitative interviews and focus groups with identified stakeholders, tailored to the specific stakeholder
  • Assist with three project deliverables (inception report, draft report, and final report)
  • Travel throughout Tanzania will be required.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • BA in international relations, conflict analysis, peace studies, or related social science field or statistics; Master’s Degree, is preferable
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in carrying out research and surveys with recognized national or international organizations/institutions in CVE or similar field;
  • Ability to analyze data using up to date statistical tools for purposes of building a reliable database;
  • Tangible reference of similar assignments required;
  • Understanding of contemporary thinking on radicalization and violent extremism;
  • integrity by modelling the UN’s values and ethical standards (human rights, peace, understanding between peoples and nations, tolerance, integrity, respect, results orientation (UNDP core ethics), impartiality);
  • Promotion of the vision, mission, and strategic goals of UNDP;
  • Displays cultural, gender, religion, race, nationality and age sensitivity and adaptability;
  • Ability to work under pressure and to deliver in a timely manner without compromising quality standards;
  • Strong communications skills;
  • IT competencies at least in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and internet; and
  • Fluency in spoken and written English and Swahili is required.
