SAYC on Sustainable Development Goals by Accountability Advocates Zambia

The first Southern Africa Youth Conference on SDGs (SAYC) organized by the Accountability Advocates Zambia in partnership with the Ministry of  National Development Planning, the United Nations Zambia office and various stakeholders will be held from 16th to 18th August 2017 in Lusaka Zambia. The Conference aims to bring together youth from 15 countries, and over 200 representatives and relevant youth stakeholders in the design, implementation and monitoring of SDGs. It will also provide an opportunity to demonstrate that when young people are actively engaged, with data and technology and through collaboration with range of relevant stakeholders, they can make a contribution to social accountability at a local, national and ultimately global levels. It shall also create an opportunity for young people to realize their rights, potential and role as agents of change in the community they live in.
The conference shall focus on creating dialogue platform among the youth from the region to share best practices and develop strategies on how to hold policy makers accountable on SDGs. It shall also create a platform that shall enable the Youth in Southern Africa to develop specific and measurable indicators to monitor the implementation of the SDGs in each specific Country. This way, the youth will be able to advocate for the changes they want to see.

It is envisaged that the first conference shall result in the creation of the Southern Africa Youth Network on SDGs that shall be responsible for the establishment of its secretariat. The SAYN on SDGs will operate for the next 15 years with its secretariat rotating among the member states every 3 years, this shall ensure that the outcomes of the conferences are sustainable.

Overall objectives

To create a platform were young people shall share strategies on how to monitor the SDGs in their countries, and work together internationally to advocate for greater youth participation in the development agenda so as to enable young people strengthen their voices and increase their influence.
Specific objectives of the conference are:

  • To provide a platform for knowledge sharing to strengthen youth led accountability on SDGs
  • To Popularizing the SDGs and their relevance among the Participants in the Southern Africa Region.
  • To support youth leaders from the region to develop accountability frameworks for national level monitoring and implementation on SGDs.
  • To facilitate for the establishment of the Southern Africa Youth Network on SDGs.


  • Self-Motivated Youth between age 18 to 35
  • Potential to lead
  • Knowledgeable about the SDGs and the current situation in the Southern Africa Region or particular Southern Africa Country(s)
  • While aiming for the best Southern Africa Candidates, we will also accept 10 exceptional Non-Southern Africa Candidates whose global exposure will add to the richness of the program.
