United Nations Environment Programme Internship

Are you below 30 and above 18 years old, and want to be part of a diverse and dynamic team from all over the world? Do you want to gain a first-hand experience of the United Nations global processes, both in the intergovernmental and inter-agency fields? Do you a want to have better understanding of major environmental issues confronting the world as well as emerging trends? Furthermore, do you want to have insights as to how the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) responds to these global and regional concerns?

The internship programme at the UN Environment New York Office (NYO) is a great opportunity to apply scholarly acquired knowledge to a professional experience. It is a platform not just for career development, but for personal growth. The programme is on a full-time basis, working under the supervision of a UN Environment staff member. Our interns assignment’s generally cover intergovernmental processes, interagency policy coordination, and outreach and communication.

There are 3 three-month internship periods available throughout the year: mid-January to mid-April; mid-April to mid-July and early September to end of December. However, these periods may be adjusted to take into account the schedule of intergovernmental meetings at UN Headquarters and the needs of the Office. The initial three-month period can be extended to a maximum of six months.


a) Applicants should be enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. degree programme in a graduate school at the time of application and also during the internship, or have graduated not more than a year before that date.

b) Applicants pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages should have completed at least three years of university studies.

Qualifications should include:

  • Background in environmental studies, international relations, international development or environmental policy or law, as well as demonstrated interest in the environment;
  • Understanding of cross-cutting major environmental issues;
  • Knowledge of global, regional and national intergovernmental processes;
  • Strong research, writing, communication and analytical skills;
  • Computer literacy, especially with MS Word and Excel;
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Ability to work creatively, independently and as a team member;
  • Good time-management skills;
  • Knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.
